2013 Oscar Fashion Photo Contest — And the Winners Are….

It’s always easy to judge my annual Oscar Fashion Photo Contest — at least for the first two cuts, at the most.  After that, the cream is definitely rising to the top of that year’s pool, and I have to start looking really hard, and at times going with a gut decision on what worked and what didn’t.  As the knowledge of the contest starts circulating around the Grid (no pun intended here with the title of my blog), more and more really good photographers/models start submitting photos to the Flickr and Koinup groups, or contacting me with link submissions.  It always makes for an interesting few days following the submission deadline (at the end of the Academy Awards in RL) as I work through the offerings of people whose work I come to respect and admire.  Additionally, I normally plan out extra time to work on this, just in case my RL work schedule interferes or other emergencies pop up (such as computer crashes, which happened a year or two ago).

In terms of time, things fell together this year, and I had three straight days off to examine the entries, which I think hit a record this time for the Flickr side:  56 submissions.  (There were only 7 entries from Koinup for some reason, and none from outside Second Life; it may not have gotten enough publicity there for the word to get out decently.)  And so I am proud to announce, both on behalf of myself and the contest’s sponsors, Sascha’s Designs and Styles by Danielle, this year’s winners.  You can click through on the photos (or the associated link) to go to the original’s page, so that you may see their work full size, and drop air kisses on them with faves and comments (grin).

Rachele Delgado captured the moment perfectly — the breathless thrill of standing on the biggest stage in the performing arts and getting the amazingly heavy little statue to hold in your hand as you try to thank everyone under the sun in about two and a half minutes.  A nice extra fillip was adding in the screen closeup behind her, very similar to what is often done today with projection screens in large auditoriums.  Her dress is a nice cocktail-length number in Vintage Rose from Valentina E. Couture.

The presenters can be as much fun as the winners.  Just take a look at Jack Nicholson this year as he introduced the biggest presenter of them all — First Lady Michelle ObamaDomitalia Jinx gives us a taste of this as she gets ready to go on stage as a pinch-hitter, with the name of the year’s outstanding performance by an actor in a leading role; she shimmers here in a taupe creation and jewels from PurpleMoon.

Third Place (L$1,000 cash / L$1,000 in gift cards from Sascha’s Designs and Styles by Danielle)

Third Place is actually a double effort!  Dolly Baroque (right) and Ayla Qinan posed together for this view of posing with each other as they’re entering the auditorium.  Nicely posed, and lovely gowns.  Dolly wears Mana in Starry Black from Baiastice, while Ayla does Marilyn in pink, from Rebel Hope.  (Both Residents will be getting an equal award in this case, not sharing it.)  More details at their blog.

Nieve Thor comes to us in Lolita by PurpleMoon, in Hazelnut.  I think you can see the head of a stairway behind her to our left in the photo.

The men made an appearance in two photos this year, one a duet, and this one by Carthalis Rossini, where he works a Lapointe & Bastchild tuxedo suit with an interesting lizard lapel ornament.

Strawberry Singh - HM

Strawberry Singh gives us another edition of Baiastice’s Mana, this one in Glitter Gold.  Sissy Pessoa’s designs would definitely be a red-carpet contender in RL, on the level of Dior Haute Couture, which was worn by both Jennifer Lawrence and Charlize Theron at the Dolby Theater this year.

And Connie Arida gave us the best of several appearances of walking the gamut of the paparazzi as she heads into the theater.  Connie gets the boys’ notice in a lovely silver slip dress with a lacy overdress called Bella, from Avale.

I tell you again that this is not an easy task.  As I write this article, I keep wondering if maybe I should have gone with a different order in some places.  A decision has to be made at some point, though, and it’s probably best to stick with the first one I make, unless I spot something egregious that I missed before.  That’s how good these people are at their work, how high the bar gets set every year.  I think there’s been a definite progression in quality over the now four years that I’ve run this contest.

The good thing is that this rising of quality keeps the contest exciting for me every year as I see what you all have to offer; and the photographer/models are also improving in their skills and story-telling abilities.  I hope you’ve enjoyed it this year, and that you’ll check back next January or February when the 5th Annual Contest opens up.
