Last of the Summer Wine

Last of the Summer Wine 1 blog

I found this little sort-of-bar thing on the crescent white-sand island here in seni seviyorum, and chose it to model five different colors of a pants outfit from Sascha’s Designs, called Pepper. It includes everything except the shoes. This color combination is called Happy.

“I know I am but summer to your heart, and not the full four seasons of the year….” — Edna St. Vincent Millay

Summer technically ended over a month back; but the heat has just really broken here in RL Alabama.  In Second Life, of course, seasons are more a function of how the sim owner wants to have them; and so I jumped in to a tropical region to take a last look at summer before I start pulling out my fleece and shearling coats in earnest.  I spotted an interesting little location, seni seviyorum, via the Places page on Koinup.  With a little persistence, you can often find someplace new and engaging to check out for posing, and I did so this time.

Color:  Ocean. Each brilliantly dyed top has its own matching set of pants that form a unit.

“O! how shall summer’s honey breath hold out, / Against the wrackful siege of battering days?” — Shakespeare, Sonnet 65

Of course, for many, summer’s end means the start of frost on the ground, of cool (not to say cold) winds and wet, heading toward snows and the dark drear of winter.  After living for over 30 years in southern climes, I dream of autumn’s coming every year as the breaking of the vicious heat.  But, obviously, this is a function of where you come from and what you’re used to.

Color: Splash. These outfits are wonderfully colorful; not quite a tie-dye thing, but with beautiful streaks of each color theme printed into the silk top.

“Dandelion wine. The words were summer on the tongue. The wine was summer caught and stoppered…sealed away for opening on a January day with snow falling fast and the sun unseen for weeks…” — Ray Bradbury, Dandelion Wine

Still, summer does have its advantages.  Vacations (or holidays, if you’re of the European persuasion), sports like baseball, and the most definite opposite of the snows of winter; growing things all around you, filling the air with the smell of life in all its profusion.  It’s a time to enjoy your life, to have fun with friends and to luxuriate in the beauty of the world around you.

Color: Swirl. Along with each outfit, I'm wearing these HUD sandals from KoiKoi for SLink feet. I didn't think to change the colors while I was shooting the photos; remembering to get the shadows turned back on for each pose was wrestle enough!

“Why is summer mist romantic and autumn mist just sad?” — Dodie Smith, I Capture the Castle

The colors in the various iterations of Sascha’s outfit capture the colors of summer, with everything in bloom, heading toward the sere brown and gold of high summer as the heat warms the earth and the prime heads off toward the perhaps bolder reds, browns and golds of autumn.  Each silk top is printed with bold, beautiful splashes of color in lovely combinations that catch the eye and give joy to the soul.

And of course, what better way to finish the sequence than a dose of Summertime Blues?

“Summer ends, and Autumn comes, and he who would have it otherwise would have high tide always and a full moon every night.” — Hal Borland

Summer must end, though; perhaps less sharply here in the tropics of Second Life, or in the southern United States of my real life, but the time does come.  Still, why not have something to remind you of the next summer to come; to bring flashes of color and remembered joy to your white-shrouded days?  And, truthfully, fall and winter are necessary times as well, giving Gaia time to catch Her breath and recharge for the next spring and summer.
