New Year’s Elegance

New Year's 1

So Harper invites me to write articles for her blog, and I say, “Well, I’ve done some writing before, back in college, but I hope you’re not expecting something that’ll win an award.”

“Nah,” Harper goes, “this is just for the blog.  Have you used WordPress before?”

“No….”  Learning a new program?  I was getting tenser.

“No problem; it’s very like Word or OpenOffice.  If you blow something up, I’ll fix it afterward with you.  So, we’ll do another fashion shoot, and you can write up the details.”  And I hemmed and I hawed and I sipped at my coffee, and madness must have hit me.  Or Harper had that coffee drugged; I was at her house on the Cayo.  But I said yes.

“Great!  We’ll get all glammed up, and you can do the New Year’s Day article.”

“NEW YEAR’S????” I shouted.  (I did shout, I think; it said “Jem Sternhall shouts” on the screen.  I wonder if they heard me in the next island?)  “Isn’t that like the first article of the year?  Real important or something?”

Harper gave me a Look.  (That’s what it said on the screen:  “Harper Ganesvoort gives Jem a Look.”)  “I’ve been doing this for over seven years now, kid; it’s just another article.  Don’t worry, have some fun, and we’ll see how you do.”

Next thing I knew, I was pulling on a lovely gown I’d chosen from a store called JUMO, and Harper was showing me how to make gloves for SLink hands work so they show properly, and I was going through my makeup collection to see what might work with imperial purple, as Harper calls it.  (JUMO says this shade is violet.)  She took me along to a lovely club called Frank’s Elite, and we found a quiet corner to pose in while we shot some photos.  We agreed that I’d do her and she’d do me, and she came up with an idea that we’d stand in the background for each other’s photos as well.  Looks damn good to me, and she liked it, too.

It’s hard not to look good in Second Life, I’m finding.  (No, I have no intentions of sharing my real photos here anytime soon, or on Flickr.)  I may start fiddling with the mesh bodies and heads Harper has shown me, but I’m content right now with what I was issued by Second Life when I joined up.  (Besides, that’s more money I’d be spending, and I don’t have that kind of bankroll behind me yet.)  And this dress works great with me.  I love the floral brocade on the skirt as well as the strapless bodice.  And evening gloves!  Mmmmm, yes….

If only big hairstyles were so easy to do in the Real World.  Here, you just click a few times, and the hair is done, instead of spending an hour or two in front of your mirror, or dropping hundreds at a hairdresser.  (Of course, this hair is nothing when compared to that crazy red wig I wore when Harper had us dressed like aliens!  Blame her, not me, for that one, lol.)

Harper also chose a dress by JUMO, as it worked out.  Hers is a little more elaborate, I guess; but it’s still great looking, and Harper knows how to rock Big SL Fashion by now.  Give me some time, and I’ll get more daring.  I love the cape effect off the shoulders, as well as the sequined fabric itself.  Another nice thing I’m finding from JUMO:  they often sell you the shoes that go with the dress as well, though you could always wear your own from someone else.  This time, for me, it was a convenience.  I have a shoe thing in the Real World, but I haven’t had the linden dollars (lindens?) to start building a shoe collection yet.

New Year's - Harper 2

I caught Harper in a great shot here, crooking her finger as if she was calling you over.  And I love that eye makeup she has!  She’s taught me how to layer things for effect, but (once again) she has a much larger collection of stuff than I have.

Okay, there it is, aside from what Harper says we always need at the end of an article; she’s gonna write that part up, and mark up the categories and such for me to make it consistent with the rest of the blog.  I hope you enjoyed; it actually wasn’t that bad!
