O Canada

O Canada! 1

O Canada! Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.

With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

Here I am back in Calas Galadhon, which has portions that I think are very reminiscent of the wild portions of our northern neighbor, Canada.  Today, July 1, is Canada Day, the country’s national day, and I’m dressed appropriately in the colors of their flag, the world-famous Maple Leaf.

O Canada! 2

I was hoping to find a Canadian designer in world, but nobody (including Search) knows of one. So, instead, Maren wears this lovely gown in Maple Leaf Red (or Red Ensign Red, if you are of the old opinion over the Canadian flag) from Thalia Heckroth.

I’m not really sure what the majority of Americans think of when they think of Canada. Many familiar with Comedy Central’s South Park may have a very…interesting…concept of what Canada is; which, to borrow from Cartman, is complete bull****.  Others may think of Canada as the home of endless hockey games while fans drenched in maple syrup swill Molson’s in the bleachers and finish all sentences with “Eh?”, or where they play a weird shuffleboard on ice called curling for some reason, or the land of legions of moose and red-coated men with funky-looking hats on their heads.  I, however, have visited Canada several times, have in-laws from there on one side, have watched much of the CBC’s The National, and done much reading.  I think I have a slightly gentler opinion (grin)….

Yes, it’s true that many native Canadians (or those who learned English in the country) say words similar to “about” like it was a boat.  But those people usually have ancestors who clawed a country out of one of the most cussed, unforgiving pieces of real estate on the North American continent, if you start at the muskeg and shield rock north of Lake Superior and head west.  When you make it to the Canadian Rockies, the Canadians really had it rough.  And it’s even harder still today when you get up to the region where snow actually covers the ground most of the year.  And this land has produced some of the greatest industrialists, scientists, thinkers, artists, musicians and scholars world history has known.  It’s a place where, though there have been and still are tensions and broken promises between the native peoples and the European colonists, relations have been much more peaceful than they ever were in the United States.

The eyeshadow from SlackGirl led me on a merry chase; but SlackGirl herself helped me track the makeup down. Many thanks!!!

Canada is a land with stunningly beautiful cities — and even more stunning natural vistas just kilometers beyond those cities.  (They got the prettier half of Niagara Falls!  And look for photos of Banff National Park some time….)  Most of the population lives within a thousand kilometers of the border with the United States, but they work to manage their entire land on the principles of tolerance and good government.  Their country is young compared to even the United States — today is the 149th anniversary of Canadian confederation, while we’ll be celebrating our 240th birthday on July 4 — but it holds its place among the world powers, stepping onto the global stage at a place called Vimy Ridge during World War I; and they today regularly sends troops of the Canadian Forces to serve in peacekeeping duty around the globe.  It regularly honors its greatest sons and daughters of all ethnicities for fulfilling the spirit of the motto of the Order of Canada — Desiderantes meliorem patriam, “They desire a better country.”

The sandals are Zara from KC Couture, brand new and versatile.

So happy birthday to our neighbors.  May we be true and good neighbors for as long as the maple leaves turn red and gold and fall to the ground in the winters and grow green again in the springtimes.  Bonne chance, Canada; good luck!
