It’s Dannta’s Turn   Leave a comment

I can’t cover up my feelings
In the name of love
Or play it safe
For a while that was easy
And if living for myself
Is what I’m guilty of
Go on and sentence me
I’ll still be free

When I first saw this pantsuit on a recent visit to Sascha’s Designs, the first thing that popped into my head was “Carole Bayer Sager!”  And why Sager, you ask?  Because I remember a book of photographs by Kenny Rogers from some 20 years ago, with a photo of Carole and her second husband, Burt Bacharach, both dressed in white.  Carole said in the book that white was her signature color (though I’ve seen her in photos wearing other colors since), and this has simply stuck with me over time.

Oh ho they’re playing my song
Oh yeah they’re playing my song
And when they’re playing my song
Every body’s got to
Shh Shh Shh
Don’t say a word now
Listen to that sweet melody
I’m happy to say
In my own humble way
Every perfect note of that was written by me

Sager tried over the years to make a career for herself as a singer; but her greatest talent, in my opinion, has always been as a songwriter and lyricist. She is a graduate of New York City’s old High School of Music and Art, and actually started her songwriting career there by co-writing (with Toni Wine) “A Groovy Kind of Love” in the Sixties; the song first became a hit for The Mindbenders — it’s still a staple of Sixties and oldies channels — and most recently re-hit in a version by Phil Collins. But her best-known pop work was done with Melissa Manchester in the Seventies — I can still sing every line of “Come In From the Rain” — and Burt Bacharach in the Eighties (“Arthur’s Theme” et al.).

Whatever it is
It’ll keep ’til the morning
Haven’t we both got better things to do
Midnight blue

Even the simple things become rough
Haven’t we had enough
And I think we can make it
One more time
One more time for all the old times

White, of course, is a perfect neutral color, and can serve as a backdrop for any other color in the spectrum.  Dannta tends to prefer at least a splash of purple somewhere in her garb, fitting her culture’s assignment of the amethyst as the badge of office she holds in my stories.  Here, modeling Sascha’s Blitz, Dai has on a pair of earrings with a single purple strand running through the design (menu driven), a pair of rings from Kunglers, and her makeup palette.  The Aurora head from Akeruka gives her the perfect semi-exotic look for a woman from another planet, living on this shore.
