Great grandfather’s farm is still there
But it isn’t the same ….

Some of my fondest memories are of a barn, such as the one you can just make out behind me here. After all, I may be much a product of cities and college these days, but I started out as a country girl in rural Michigan.

When I was a child, we lived on a corner acre of land out of the 40 acres or so owned by my step-grandfather. He had been a long-time farmer in the township we lived in, and he offered an acre of land to all the children of his family on their marriage. My father was the only one who took him up on the gift. So, where we were placed near the road, we could look across the field up to Granny and Grampa’s house, on a small hill above us. We’d drive over to visit frequently; and, during the summer, I’d have a chance to go out to the old barn below the house.

That barn was a fascinating place to a child less than 10 years old. Grampa had mostly retired by the time I was born, and he kept no animals there; but it was fun to explore. It still smelled of old hay kept in the loft, and it was all light and shadows in a space huge to my child’s eyes. Dad told me about Grampa keeping at least one cow for family milk (it cost less that way than buying from the milkman), and he’d give the local cats that camped out inside the place their traditional treat of squirts from the cow’s teats. (He was supposed to have a pretty good aim, too.) All that was gone by the time I was born, and the barn was used more as a garage for the old powder-blue Ford car Granny drove around as an enumerator for the farm census.

A lot of years have gone by since then. The people who bought the land from Granny tore the old barn down and put in a metal structure, long before the craze for barn wood came in. I miss that place, and the time of greater innocence, and the people who lived there … but they live on in my mind and my heart.
