Sojourn in Sindaria

When last we met, Jemmy was giving me the Dickens — in a joshing sort of way — over not properly introducing Morgan to the readers … in a Technicolor photoshoot of colorful alien skins and fantasial costumes.

To which … I agreed that she was right. And, as Morgan looked on in fascinated horror, I started to make my plans ….

Watering Hole

at-the-blarney-stone

They say it’s always 5:00 somewhere, and we chose our five o’clock to go to The Blarney Stone.  Harper tells me “the Stone” is one of the longest running pubs in Second Life; looking at her old posts and the pictures, I believe her!  I think it’s gotten a little more gentrified over the years, but it’s easier to find good seats now, from the looks of the old tables and chairs.

Which is a good thing if you’re wearing these shoes!  Both of us have gotten a taste for extreme heels lately, and Lori Novo (shoutout!) had these on her blog in a recent piece.  We also both loved the Meva Cubes dresses from the current round of Cosmopolitan (rush out to the place if you haven’t yet; remember, they cycle stock every 2 weeks).  The boots are HUD-controlled, so there are more colors than just gold and silver.  We decided to match the strips of studs on our dresses, instead of the dresses themselves.

You’ve seen our skins and you can’t see our makeup that well in this shot — the only one I took, actually — so I’ll just hit the high points below.  There’s a larger photo on Flickr, in PNG, at wallpaper size, so you can download it and look at stunning beauty every day if you like, lol.

Cyborgs of Fantasy

It was a Saturday evening, two nights before the official public première of The Land of Fantasy’s new revue, which Lady Ariel Sherman and her writers had christened Nights of Fantasy.  Newsstream writers, critics and celebrities from across several stellar cubes of planetary sectors had been invited to a preview of the show, and an after-party to celebrate.  And the mood of the people milling through Sherman Mansion at that party, hosted by herself and her husband, Lord Adam Sandhara, gave Ariel every encouragement that the reviews soon to be written and off-hand interviews to be given would be strongly in the positive.  Her smile gleamed almost as much as the sheen of the garden lights from her golden integument as she moved through the crowd of information-hungry reporters and celebrities who toasted her with sparkling etrinya wine and air-kissed her when they saw her.

Four years ago, such an event hadn’t been needed.  The news coverage of the freeing of over 700 citizens of the Limlight Republic from bondage, following their near-total conversion into cyborg “pleasure workers,” had still been fresh in the public’s mind when the original version of Ariel’s revue premiered.  Now, Nights of Fantasy needed to compete in the market alongside the other entertainments on the pleasure planet Videra, and that meant publicity.  Ariel had set the marketing group her theatre always used to work on it, and that included Dara Furtano, the young woman who had arranged and masterminded this party.

Young indeed, Ariel thought as she spotted Dara under a wooden gazebo in the garden and went over to speak with her.  Figuratively, Dara was less than a year old, though she had been born over twenty years before.  Dara had requested that Ariel provide the means to convert her into a ‘borg herself, for reasons that still mystified Ariel in some ways.  Ariel had resisted every request — until an accident at the theatre had almost killed her and her daughter, Zana.  Dara, nearby at the time, had saved them, which placed Ariel in lifedebt to Dara; and, after more discussion, had agreed reluctantly to the conversion.  She had found no cause to regret that concession; indeed, Dara, already an excellent publicist and marketing executive, had grown even better with her now total recall of needed data, as well as the ability to synthesize solutions on the fly.  And her already present beauty had been intensified by her conversion into a silvery cyborg.

“Dara, if I had to give the night a review, I’d say you’re what they used to call a boffo success,” Ariel smiled as she stepped under the gazebo.  “Thank you so much for what you’ve done for us.  And you are as charming as could be in that gown!  I thought it would look good on you.”

Dara smiled back, if shyly, and dipped a small curtsey to her host, the fuchsia folds of her dress billowing about her in the bob.  “Thank you back, lady.  The same could be said about you, how well the show went off; it was fantastic!  And your dress is lovely, too.”

“Something I pulled out of my closet; I hadn’t had a decent place to wear it until tonight, and I don’t think you can find it anywhere now.  Who knows, but it may come back into style after tonight.”

Tholosa, the Witch-queen

October’s here!  Time to start getting in gear for Halloween, and I’ve got just the thing here.  I was going to just publish these on Flickr, but at least a few of them are pretty decent; so I’ll do the same thing here as I did on there, publish them with text beneath to explain each scene in my story.  It’s definitely a first for me, I’m not sure what Harper would have to say about this one.  But if she can publish her stuff on here, so can I, and she’s been encouraging me to. You get to judge how I do.

Fair warning disclosure — there’s a lot of large pictures here.  Have patience if it takes a little for them to load, please.

You can see the entire original collection in full size in the album on Flickr (aside from several I’m adding in here to help bulk out the collection, or that I reshot with Conan to improve things).

Tholosa the Exalted, the Witch-queen of the Empire of Oshor Chih — known not as The Exalted by her enemies, but as Tholosa of the Grave — takes her ease in her palace’s apartments, beneath a statue of one of the strange gods she worships.  Even in the gloom of her rooms, this strange woman, who has conquered and absorbed into her empire kingdom after kingdom, glows with a shell of power.  This encourages her unlettered slaves to believe in her as a goddess, and puts to use the undesirable effect of all the sorcerous protections she has cast about her in self-defense.

Club Night

club-night-1

Harper suggested we go check out a club called Cyberia Openstage.  The Destination Guide (a handy thing at times for newbies or relative newbies for finding fresh places; even you oldbies should try it sometimes) lists it as “a sci-fi themed place with an open stage for all aspiring and established deejays.”  And we loved it when we got there; someone was playing electronica at the time, and a batch of people were grooving the beat.  We recommend it for music and dancing, if you ever want to go clubbing someplace that doesn’t require a ball gown.

Clawtooth Hair Challenge — Old Hair, Old Sim, New Dress

Clawtooth - full

Last week, Cajsa Lilliehook put up an article on It’s Only Fashion to speak about one of the Grid’s nicer hair designers, Bubbles Clawtooth, the owner of Clawtooth by Clawtooth.  Cajsa’s article will tell more about it; in sum, though, Bubbles is dealing with RL family difficulties that require his full attention.  He hasn’t had much chance to create new hairstyles, and he could use some financial support to keep virtual body and soul together, if not the RL half of the equation as well.  Cajsa’s thrown down a challenge, which you can read better at her article; essentially, though, it consists of exhibit some old with the new, using three Clawtooth hairstyles.  I chose to feature the wigs with one new dress — Uma from PurpleMoon, in “Tropical” print.  There are several different patterns to choose from, on a dress with thin crossed straps both in front and behind, and a laces slit along the left leg of the midi skirt.  Poulet hits it out of the park again with this one, and Bubbles’ hairstyles go nicely with it….

Bandana Day At Hair Fair 2015

Writing from Destin, Florida:

Copyright 2015 by Gidge Uriza.

Gidge Uriza sums it up rather nicely in her article at Its Only Fashion, which I link to for today’s big reblog.  Hair Fair every year gives us a chance to stock up on wigs for our already ready-to-explode Inventories, and I’m on of the thousands of avatars who loves to go there, fight the crowds when needed, and purchase what strikes my fancy.  But, if I could get in world today, I’d try to remember to take off my hair and wear some kind of bandanna — because Hair Fair every year is also to support and remember the kids who don’t have the beauty, luxury — or necessity — of hair in even Real Life.

Wigs for Kids exists for the purpose of supplying hair to children who, for various medical reasons, have little or no hair.  We as adults feel it when we have a “bad hair day,” and those of us who have undergone chemotherapy know how embarrassed we feel when we start having to cover our heads as the tufts of hair are falling out.  Children feel it even more, though; they’re at a stage of development where image is so much more important, where teasing can be cuttingly cruel, or where they just want to look like the others around them.  We remember these little ones on the final day of every Hair Fair by wearing a bandanna instead of the “hair” we normally sport.

Wigs for Kids helps these children reclaim their self-esteem.  But it ain’t cheap, not by a long shot.  The mission page at WfK tells us that each wig is custom designed, handmade from human hair, and the average cost is $1,800.  That’s U. S. dollars, people, not lindens.  You can gather from this that the organization needs all the help it can get, but in two different forms, not just one.

The obvious one is what Hair Fair is for.  If you haven’t been there yet, today is your last chance for the year; go find something that makes you look ravishing when you aren’t wearing your bandanna — you did get one of those, too, right?  They’re available in every Fair sim in a special shop, for donations of 50 or 100 lindens, chump change.  But buy some wigs for Second Life, and help by your purchase to buy some wigs for the kids.  Large numbers of the vendors will dedicate at least a percentage to Wigs for Kids from every purchase, and some of the designers sign over all their sales from the vendors during this fortnight to the cause.  Be generous, please.  And, if you somehow miss Hair Fair, or just decide not to go (silly girls and boys!), go to their site and give a direct donation.

But another way to help is to donate hair.  That’s a roger, RL hair.  Like I said above, the kids’ wigs are 100% human hair, no synthetics.  You have to get the hair somewhere.  The Web site also has an aid to finding a salon that will help harvest tails of hair from donors — a minimum of 12 straight inches; pull curly hair straight to be sure — for sending in to the organization.  You can find the details here.  My own family has done this in the past when we’ve had the length, and hope to again in the future.

It’s not a hairy thing to help out here; indeed, the good work here can only grow in length.  (Sorry, that’s the best I can do writing fast here.  Any road, please help out.  And remember Hair Fair next year as well!)

Keep Hair Fair in Mind

Writing from Destin, Florida —

The family is off on its annual outing in Destin.  I took along an Ethernet cable this time so I might be able to get in world on my laptop, but I can’t seem to get a connection; so I’ll be reblogging things without too much in the way of photos until about Tuesday or Wednesday next week.  I always try to bring you the best, though, so stay tuned to this blog!

First up is a piece from Gidge Uriza at Its Only Fashion.  She reminds us there’s only a few more days left to this year’s Hair Fair, so you’d better get in while you have a chance to stock up at the Grid’s Home of Hair and Heart this year.  Remember that many of your purchases will be at least split with Wigs for Kids to help that group supply wigs for children who have lost their hair for various medical reasons.  This charity is almost as popular as the various Relay for Life functions, and is often well-stocked with Residents for the first few days.  Now’s the time to work your way around, before it sinks beneath the waves for another year!

Gidge is wearing in her photos one of the hairstyles available at the Fair, from Olive, along with a dress from this month’s Collabor88 which, if you are interested in it, you should be sure to pick up the demo on first!  Gidge mentions what she is wearing is fitted to the Belleza mesh body, so don’t spend more than a linden to be sure that you can wear what you want.  See photos at Gidge’s article.

From Hair Fair 2015 — Zibska Titan

Zibska Titan 1j

If you want something that looks futuristic, two places to go to are sYs and Zibska.  With careful choices, the avant-garde selection of clothes at sYs will fill the bill quite nicely, while still be wearable day-to-day around the Grid.  And Zibska…well, most of Zib Scaggs’ wigs and makeup are definitely on the rising side of the fashion curve — as in “attaining escape velocity.”

Here’s a nice mix of goodies for your consideration, including one of Zibska’s new hairstyles available at Hair Fair 2015.  As for the outfit, the Hesiod pants are constructed of Neoprene — wetsuit rubber, in other words, and nicely fitting, with a button fly.  The pants are paired in the set with mid-sleeved crop tops in luxuriant materials.  And these sandals have heels that I love:

sYs shoes

I’d hate walking on these for a long term in RL, but they’re magnificent in Second Life.

Zibska Titan 2j

The focus for now, of course, is Hair Fair.  We move to Zibska, then, and her Titan style, one of five available.  It comes with a box of hairbases; considering some of the scripted colors available, you’ll want it.  I went conservative in this case, and stuck with blonde.  And how does one get your hair wound up into a pair of chain-link strands?  Don’t ask me, man; all I know is that it looks great!  I added on Zibska eyeshadow, which may or may not still be available, as Zib staged a clearance recently, and my usual (not available) Liquid Glaze liner.  Not a bad look overall for someone who is off duty on a space station!
