A Last Bit of Sunshine

erratic trisha 1

“One must maintain a little bit of summer, even in the middle of winter.” — Henry David Thoreau

The merchants at the monthly Uber event are giving us a last splash of summer before we settle into coats and sweaters for the winter.  The cold season comes fast and hard in Second Life — one day your sim may be sunshiny and all flowers; the next, you’re blanketed in white.  Why not find somewhere to take in a little last-minute color to tide you over until spring returns?

Warming Up Fall with Prism

I stopped by the Pixel Bean Coffee House this morning for a cup of joe, and found that the deck was deep in falling leaves.  There was a rake and wheelbarrow off to the side, but the maintenance man looked to be taking a break.  A definite nip in the air, too — fall is arriving for sure.  My legs cursed me for wearing a miniskirt this morning, but at least the rest of me was nice and warm in this outfit from Prism, given to me by the store’s Herradura Baar as a rezz day gift last week.

Don’t you just love that texture, created by Journey McLaglen?  You can see the individual knit rows here, and the colors are wonderful, a contrast to the reds and golds of the leaves around us.  (Although, if you have a taste for lots of orange, there’s a special Hallowe’en version available at the store right now.)  The prim collar and shoulders are very nice, as well, and don’t look to go shifting around into Strange Locations.  (There are stocking cuffs as well, but I left them off here.)  Lots of nice, snuggly warmth here for a chilly autumn morning.  I’d better enjoy it now, before the virtual snow starts to fly in many places.

20,000 Leagues (via A Passion for Virtual Fashion)

Eshi Otawara definitely doesn’t do things…normal. And bless her for it, for we get some of the most delicious confections you could imagine — haute couture at its most haute. Harper Beresford describes one of the latest from the woman who holds the record for the most expensive dress sold at auction in Second Life….

20,000 Leagues “The sea is everything. It covers seven tenths of the terrestrial globe. Its breath is pure and healthy. It is an immense desert, where man is never lonely, for he feels life stirring on all sides.” ~ Jules Verne It’s clear Eshi Otawara needs a trip to the beach. She has come out today with a set of gowns based on being in the ocean, near the floor—20,000 leagues under. With her fantastic Japanese-influenced fish and fronds of kelp, she has const … Read More

The White Witch

O brothers mine, take care! Take care!
The great white witch rides out to-night.
Trust not your prowess nor your strength,
Your only safety lies in flight;
For in her glance there is a snare,
And in her smile there is a blight.

After seeing the original at Harper Beresford's blog (A Passion for Virtual Fashion), I had to give Eshi Otawara's "Black Gems are Forever" a shot of my own. However, I decided I'd discard the pants she had in the confection, and used an old skirt from Anubis Style instead (which I think was created for the old Rezzable "Black Swan" show, as that was the name on the gown).

The great white witch you have not seen?
Then, younger brothers mine, forsooth,
Like nursery children you have looked
For ancient hag and snaggle-tooth;
But no, not so; the witch appears
In all the glowing charms of youth….

I especially love Eshi's headdress of jet-topped pins and a "veil" of thin, flexible "wires." I've pinned it into a fri.day coiffure -- normally the SL epitome of casual style; but with this headdress added to it....

But though she always thus appears
In form of youth and mood of mirth,
Unnumbered centuries are hers,
The infant planets saw her birth;
The child of throbbing Life is she,
Twin sister to the greedy earth.

Candy Nail has an amazing variety of prim nails, including these black talons with jewels stuck all over them.

And back behind those smiling lips,
And down within those laughing eyes,
And underneath the soft caress
Of hand and voice and purring sighs,
The shadow of the panther lurks,
The spirit of the vampire lies….

Note the black jet choker and the earrings, which mirror the headdress. There's also a ring, but the nails knocked it off, of course; one of the two things I don't appreciate about prim nails, no matter how good they make you look.

Oh! she has seen your strong young limbs,
And heard your laughter loud and gay,
And in your voices she has caught
The echo of a far-off day,
When man was closer to the earth;
And she has marked you for her prey.

She feels the old Antaean strength
In you, the great dynamic beat
Of primal passions, and she sees
In you the last besieged retreat
Of love relentless, lusty, fierce,
Love pain-ecstatic, cruel-sweet.

O, brothers mine, take care! Take care!
The great white witch rides out to-night.
O, younger brothers mine, beware!
Look not upon her beauty bright;
For in her glance there is a snare,
And in her smile there is a blight.

Ever’thing Green an’ Lovely

Since my computer was on the fritz again up until Wednesday afternoon, and I never got around to getting back in world after I got it home and hooked up, I never got a chance to wear what I’d planned on for Saint Patrick’s Day (sigh).  Don’t it just frost you?

But that doesn’t mean I can’t share it with you, can I?

For a daytime casual look, I decided to echo the theme of the Irish tricolor — or at least 2/3 of it.  I tried on a white wig, but was displeased with the effect, so I went back to the red of a true Irish colleen.  I did some hunting on XStreet, as I’ve mentioned elsewhere, to find a green top — in this case, the top from a gown in a silk brocade — and a pair of orange pants.  I was thinking of something a little plainer than this bodice, but it works quite nicely instead, giving the strapless corseted look that we all love so much.  The pumps make for an alternating color scheme; and, for the final touch, I’m wearing alternating green and “orange” (actually coral) jewelry, switching colors from the earrings to the bracelets.

  • Top: Preciouss’ Things Danielle (bodice from an evening gown)
  • Pants: DeLa Diva “Irina” pants (orange)
  • Hair: fri.day Jules (Jealous Red)
  • Nails: Skin Within Vixen manicure/pedicure
  • Shoes: Ivanka Akina Eternity pumps (green)
  • Jewelry: Zaara Kaya in malachite and coral — one earring and one set of bracelets from each color, alternating.
  • Glasses: epoque Swan shades (“loud” color; script-set to green frames, clear lenses)

And for the night, how about this…!

The gown is a green-and-white version of Astrid, a new dress from Clio, one of my favorite designers so far.  Clio Cardiff comes up with clean, lovely designs that are still wonderful, sophisticated and sexy.  For instance, this gown’s top is cut way low, but the shaping doesn’t leave half of my boobs hanging out, while still giving a provocative look at the cleavage.  Want an extra touch of femininity?  Add the bow attachment to the halter strap.  (It’s nice and flexible, which made for some great photographs!)

For the jewels, I decided to go dramatic and big, and chose these emeralds from my recent run through the Accessory Fair.  They’re made by GaNKeD, a store which is getting a lot of attention recently for some really sensational jewelry.  I wanted an extra splash, so I chose one of the “handrings” from the Hydra series by Rozoregalia.

  • Gown: Clio Astrid (green/white, with opera gloves)
  • Shoes: As above
  • Hair: ETD Cadey (copper; I’m not sure if Elika still sells this)
  • Jewelry: GaNKeD Jealousy suite (necklace, bracelet, earrings — emeralds in gold); Rozoregalia Hydra handrings (right wrist)

2010 SL Oscar Fashion Contest: And the Winners Are….

A bit of a cash windfall allowed me to do an unannounced increase in the prizes for my first SL Oscar Fashion Contest!  The first place will receive L$2,500; 2nd, L$2,000; and 3rd, L$1,500.  I’m also going to do four Honorable Mentions, and have decided after checking the bank account that each will receive L$250.

As these things always are, this was not an easy contest to judge.  I had around 50 entries by the time I closed my groups at Flickr and Koinup for the year, including one who entered by leaving a link in the comments to my original contest announcement (a legal form of entry).  Almost all of the entries were good, and many of them were excellent good.  I had to rework the cut three times before I started the judging in real earnest.  And, in the end, 2nd and 3rd place were tied — although any one of the three places might have been worthy of first.

And so my thanks to all, my congratulations to the winners, and I hope you’ll enjoy the shopping spree I’ve just financed for you.  The Accessory Fair is going right now, so there’s a chance to blow the cash in one spot (grin).

Onward to the winners!

Refusing to Shed My (Snake)skin (Skirt)

Once in a while, you gotta have something not part of a single dress combination.  As Cajsa Lilliehook and Gidge Uriza of It’s Only Fashion are so fond of showing, and as we all know in real life, mix ‘n match is the way to go.  Of course, these days it’s called a mashup, but (shrug).

I saw this skirt on a shopping run one afternoon, and knew I wanted it.  I’d never wear snakeskin in real life; snakes have their rights, after all, except maybe for invasive-species pythons in the Florida Everglades.  But here in Second Life, snakes are far from an endangered creature; they’re just another texture on a prim.  To go along with this, I dug until I found this halter top from League, and added a belt to the ensemble to make the waist look right.

Since it was a midi skirt, I could wear boots with no problems; and so I pulled out an old favorite, my pair of the original model of Biddle black boots.  Bax Coen is all the rage right now, but Biddle still has fine boots, and I’d never delete these babies.

The jewelry is a set (purchased as separates in this case) of what looks rather pre-Columbian themed pieces:  a collar, cuff bracelets and earrings from alaMood.  And the hair!  I didn’t know that Miamai did hair, but now I do.  I had to mess with this to get a fit, but it adjusts quite readily, with no scripts.

The details:

Shape/skin:  my standard Type 1, except for: Atomic Bambi’s Lana Sunblush skin (Siren eye makeup, gloss lipstick)

Hair: Miamai Teresa (ginger)
Top: League gold halter top
Skirt: Nardcotix Eve snakeskin skirt (green)
Belt: fri.day Wide Waist belt (gold)
Shoes: Biddle Sculptie Boots (black)
Jewelry: alaMood Akhal Teke collar, cuffs and earrings
