It’s Jem’s Fault   4 comments

This is what the new house looks like from the land side. I had to temporarily derezz some of the trees in front to show it.

The weird thing about houses is that they almost always look like nothing is happening inside of them, even though they contain most of our lives. I wondered if that was sort of the point of architecture.

“Black Coffee, Babe!”   1 comment

It is inhumane, in my opinion, to force people who have a genuine medical need for coffee to wait in line behind people who apparently view it as some kind of recreational activity.

Dave Barry

These days, it seems, you gotta have something else besides just the coffee — you need a great coffeehouse to serve the brew up. And not just the coffee, but the ever-essential pastries and sandwiches and juices. I suspect (based on my reading; I’m not that old) that anyone who hung out in a Sixties beatnik coffeehouse, and then was dropped into a modern Starbucks, would shriek in horror, and demand that they immediately go back to serving just coffee, right that instant (no, not instant coffee), or she would explain to them the absurdity of all human activity, and let them struggle with the existential shock.

Home Again   1 comment

Like love, breakfast is best when made at home.

Gina Barreca

I wasn’t planning on writing again so soon; but events kind of bumped my schedule up a bit, as I thought I’d share this bump in my Second Life with everyone.

Now I know a little … just a little … how Harper felt when she went through a bunch of moves some years back. The sudden pulling of the rug from under your elegantly-shod feet at the general notice from the landlord, followed by the scramble to pack up everything you’ve laid out just so; and then the hunt to find somewhere else to lay your stuff back down, within both your budget and your land impact needs. And then, of course, the discovery of stuff you missed by the old landlord; with luck, you’ll get them back when they clear remaining objects off the sim.

Well, the bad news is that that’s what happened to me on Monday. (To Diana, too, since she shares digs with me.)

Hey, Daddy!   2 comments

Hey, listen to my story ’bout a gal named Daisy Mae
Lazy Daisy Mae
Her disposition is rather sweet and charming
At times alarming, so they say
She has a man who’s tall dark handsome, large and strong
To whom she used to sing this song

Hey, Daddy
I want a diamond ring
Bracelets and everything
Daddy, you oughta get the best for me

Hey, Daddy, gee
Don’t I look great in sables?
Clothes with Paris labels?
Daddy, you oughta get the best for me

Moonlight   2 comments

There’s some interesting things at the current events and the Fantasy Faire, but I decided to dip into my back Inventory, and stumbled across this dress. Conan was kind enough to serve as mon bel amour for a shot (well, he does live in Québec), and here we are.

Moonlight becomes you
It goes with your hair
You certainly know
The right thing to wear

Moonlight becomes you
And I’m thrilled at the sight
And we could get
So romantic tonight

On Fantasy   Leave a comment

Though I’m not much of a Game of Thrones fan — I bogged down in the first book at page 25, and I don’t get HBO — I do enjoy some parts of it. (My favorites are Daenerys and Tyrion.) And I can appreciate the work and artistry in the goodies available at the Ice and Fire event, going on for one more week.

The best fantasy is written in the language of dreams. It is alive as dreams are alive, more real than real … for a moment at least … that long magic moment before we wake.

Salt Water Sunset   3 comments

… Soon it got dusk, a grapy dusk, a purple dusk over tangerine groves and long melon fields; the sun the color of pressed grapes, slashed with burgandy red, the fields the color of love and Spanish mysteries ….

Jack Kerouac, On the Road

… The sun is setting in a burnt orange sky; the cliffs are black silhouettes; the sea, liquid silver ….

Laura Treacy Bentley, The Silver Tattoo

… Bright colours in the west, giant butterflies dancing as night crept like a cripple toward the east ….
