Formal Portrait

Conan -- 2016 portrait

Well, I never was one to turn down a challenge, and I’ve been picking up formal wear lately, partly for me, partly for Harper’s storyboarding.  Here’s my own portrait, taken at the site of The Spoils of Annwn.  Harper plans to hang all three portraits on our office wall; one of us will probably photograph it and write it up when she gets it done.  (I’m wearing Balen by Heth Haute Couture, for those who are going shopping.)

My First Portrait Since My Marriage

Jem 2016 Formal Portrait

Really, this is the first time I’ve “sat” for something like this since I got married — and it was fun, getting all glammed up and finding somewhere to pose!  Working on this blog, I get to learn all sorts of fun things about how to photograph, and I’m picking up dressing tips that I might be able to use in RL too.  Although I don’t think I’d be showing up at a job interview wearing this outfit, lol.

Taking a Puff

This photo is also great, but not what I’d want for what Harper is calling a “formal sitting.”  (I think she used to study photography at some point.)  But I had the cigarette holder, and I got a chance to try a trick she’s showed me when you want to catch yourself in a certain position.  Old timers probably know this, I guess, but us young ones need those old timers to help mentor us through all the tricks there are to work within Second Life.

Anyway, this cigarette holder (a group gift from Anachron, last I knew) doesn’t stay up in your mouth long enough for you to take a puff and exhale the smoke.  But you can sort of force the issue here.  When you get into position like you want, right-click something and choose Edit.  That will freeze you into position without necessarily stopping other scripts from running.  I waited until I had the holder in my mouth, clicked Edit, then waited again the couple of seconds for a puff of smoke, and clicked the refresh on Snapshot.  And there you have it — I’m sort of taking a “double drag” on my cigarette. (Not healthy, yes, I know.  But it’s safe in Second Life.  Just don’t start up for real!)

Okay, Conan, tag; you’re it!

2016 Formal Portrait, Harper full

I like to do a full-on formal portrait of myself for my wall every couple of years; this gives me a record of  how I’ve evolved since my “advent” in October 2007, beyond everything I’ve published over the years.  I’ll probably tweak this a little before I place it up on the wall in my living room, but not considerably.  And Jemmy, since she and Conan share the house with me now, has been prevailed upon to shoot a formal as well; and I’ll start arm-twisting Conan before long!  Anyway, watch on here in just a little while for Jemmy’s photo article; I told her to hold off until I get mine up.

Here’s a medium closeup, for those interested.

Portrait photographs can be underappreciated.  What artistry is there in taking a closeup shot of a person’s face?  But the truth is, there is a lot more to it than that.  The clothing of the model, the appearance, the lighting, and other factors contribute to the quality of the final product.

You can control many of these factors as the photographer.  But one major item, the model, is often in the lap of the gods.  In this case, “photoliv42” on Koinup got extraordinarily lucky:  a client with wonderful taste in clothing and hair, and a green-eyed face alight with mystery and mischief.  photoliv42 added in some post-processing to enhance the appearance, and you have these below.  I’m making them as small as this because I want you to go photoliv42’s pages and admire them in all their glory, then click on lots of like buttons (grin).  To get there, click on the thumbnails, and I hope you enjoy as much as I do.

We’re doing a theme again for this column:  closeup shots.  People do like taking pictures of themselves in Second Life, after all, or having pictures taken of them.  Sometimes it’s a fashion layout, sometimes a Resident wants to update their profile or get a different look in it, sometimes it’s a formal portrait for the wall, and sometimes it’s just for the hell of it.  But there are a lot of “portrait” shots out there, and here’s a selection of them for your consideration.  There won’t be a lot of commentary here by me; when you’re this close in, usually the photo says more than words, in terms of composition, lighting, or Photoshop work.

(Just as a note, the photographer isn’t always the subject here.)

A Professional Portrait at Last!

Connie Arida, also known as Connie Sec, has been featured in Contact Sheet several times here, and with good reason. Take a look almost any night at her Flickr photostream, and you’ll see why; Connie takes pains with her composition, whether formal sittings or something as relatively impromptu as having some fun with the kitty kat at the Greenies’ house. So, when she invited me to sit for a portrait, I was honored and flattered.

The problem: this avatar is standing on her head in terms of time. In other words, mate, she’s Australian. That sort of puts us at the antipodes, to borrow from Jules Verne’s Around the World in Eighty Days. When I’m up, she’s just about to go down, and vice versa. And, since I work closing shift in RL most nights, and don’t get home until well into my A.M., that makes it difficult…. But I had a night off last week, and we came together, and things worked out!

Connie published this shot on her stream. (You can comment on it to Connie by following the link.)

Connie's published photo of me

She gave me copies of the others, and I’ve used one for a gravatar change, but I think the Veronica Lake look is actually starting to grow on me (grin).
