Revisiting Byron   Leave a comment

She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that’s best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes;
Thus mellowed to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies ….

George Gordon, Lord Byron, “She Walks In Beauty”

Writing the previous article reminded me of a piece I wrote back in 2013, close to this time of the year, in fact (I published it on August 31). It had been about the time of the 2013 Black Fair, and Pure Poison … who were making clothing instead of shoes back then … had just released this lovely gown, all glittering sequins and a netting overgown that melted my buyer’s resistance into a puddle of goo. I just about titled that last article the same thing as six years ago; fortunately, I recalled the previous, and found another poem, by a poet I’ve loved for years, Edna St. Vincent Millay.

Oscars Redux — I’m Jennifer Lawrence!

I'm Jennifer Lawrence 1 Jennifer Lawrence 1

Yes, this year’s Academy Awards are behind us; the OFPC is in bed until next January; but I couldn’t resist this dress when I came across it a week or so ago.  It’s just so darn close to what Jennifer Lawrence wore to this year’s ceremony in RL!  The two differences I can see are a richer red on the in-world dress (Jennifer’s, as you can see, was an orange-y color), and an extremely low back on my dress.  Not surprising on the last, though; this dress was worked up by Pure Poison, and Shaleene Kenin has a definite reputation for sexy apparel.

I'm Jennifer Lawrence 2

I tried to get fairly close to Jennifer’s actual look when I put this shoot together, but there are inevitable differences.  My hairstyle is fuller than hers, and I couldn’t find a shoulder collar necklace like hers, let alone one that draped down the back.  (Lawrence — or her stylist — seems to have a liking for this, as she wore a back-duster in 2013 as well.)  I chose to add in a grace note of color as well, thus the EarthStones watch on my wrist.  All in all, a delicious look!

She Walks in Beauty

Caledon 4

She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that ‘s best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes:
Thus mellow’d to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies.

During the recent Black Fair, I found this very daring, somewhat avant-garde dress from Pure Poison, and knew it was great for…well, for those times when you wanted to be daring and somewhat avant-garde.  Like when you go walking about during the night in one of the Caledon regions, in a dress that’s definitely not fitting in the normal style of the Victorian Steamlands.  It’s available at the main store in colors other than black; but the black with silver bugle beads is as good as you can desire.

The rest of the poem is on the next page….
