Writing from Destin, Florida:

Nana Minuet wears a lovely outfit here which you can find at the current Shiny Shabby; but I think the jacket is what really puts this ensemble together. Well styled, Nana!

Keep Hair Fair in Mind

Writing from Destin, Florida —

The family is off on its annual outing in Destin.  I took along an Ethernet cable this time so I might be able to get in world on my laptop, but I can’t seem to get a connection; so I’ll be reblogging things without too much in the way of photos until about Tuesday or Wednesday next week.  I always try to bring you the best, though, so stay tuned to this blog!

First up is a piece from Gidge Uriza at Its Only Fashion.  She reminds us there’s only a few more days left to this year’s Hair Fair, so you’d better get in while you have a chance to stock up at the Grid’s Home of Hair and Heart this year.  Remember that many of your purchases will be at least split with Wigs for Kids to help that group supply wigs for children who have lost their hair for various medical reasons.  This charity is almost as popular as the various Relay for Life functions, and is often well-stocked with Residents for the first few days.  Now’s the time to work your way around, before it sinks beneath the waves for another year!

Gidge is wearing in her photos one of the hairstyles available at the Fair, from Olive, along with a dress from this month’s Collabor88 which, if you are interested in it, you should be sure to pick up the demo on first!  Gidge mentions what she is wearing is fitted to the Belleza mesh body, so don’t spend more than a linden to be sure that you can wear what you want.  See photos at Gidge’s article.

Omni-Blogging: MSO, Hair Fair, Collabor88 & a Tinting Tutorial | Its Only Fashion

Cajsa Lillliehook, one of my old friends here in Second Life, gives a good look at goodies from this cycle of Collabor88, and throws in a quick tutorial on tinting for newbies (or oldbies who need a refresher).  Rush over and read!

YadNi s Junkyard has closed down after 11 years in Second Life

It’s sad to hear this, but nothing lasts forever. Still, I do recall working my way through the Junkyard several times in my early years, until I got my virtual legs under me; freebie stores like YadNi’s are fantastic places for newbies to get themselves established. And and 11-year run is mind-boggling in Second Life.

YadNi s Junkyard 001 January 18, 2011

After 11 years the well known YadNi s Junkyard in Second Life has closed down which is a massive loss and very sad to see this landmark disappear. YadNi s Junkyard started back on 6th April 2004 and it was the first freebies store in Second Life history to launch. YadNi s Junkyard was one of the top favourite places for new residents to get freebies, getting started in Second Life and it was a good places to make new friends.

YadNi Monde posted this message on Google+ on June 23rd 2015.

YadNi s Junkyard has closed today.
After 11 years of helping Thousands new residents with REAL freebies, full perms, for free, and one of the most long lasting money trees, I had to close the place today.
I hope you have good souvenirs of that place.

It’s going to be hard to imagine what the grid…

The Second Life® Dictionary of Virtual Experience: Inventory

This is too good not to share; I’ve been through some of this, and I’ve only (!!!) managed to accumulate some 40,000 pieces of inventory (including Library). Then again, I’ve never opened up all of my boxes and bags….

(Running screaming into the night!)

What the Huck?

Inventory_001

One of my favourite dip-in books is Douglas Adams’ and John Lloyd’s ‘The Meaning of Liff’.  This wonderful little book puts UK place names to work describing things which currently have no word for them in the English language.  Examples of this include ‘Ible,’ defined as ‘clever but lazy’ and ‘Scramoge,’ defined as ‘to cut oneself whilst licking envelopes’.

It occurs to me that, as virtual world living appears set to become a more mainstream phenomena, it’s perhaps time we started defining some of the more familiar metaverse experiences so that future generations can benefit from an established lexicon when struggling to come to terms with life in prims and pixels.  After all, what point is there in being a pioneer if you don’t pass forward all this learning in some way?  It’s a process I in fact already started several years ago when – as no doubt you are…

A German Machinima with a Christmas Theme

An excellent and seasonal piece to go with the season — I encourage you to read the whole article and watch the machinima’s first episode. As Jo says at the end of her piece, “Frohe Weihnachten!”

Jo Yardley's Second Life

Well known artist Ole Etzel, who was the subject of an excellent ‘Drax Files’ episode, moved in to a small dirty damp apartment in our 1920s Berlin sim and created a wonderful machinima in the dark streets and alleyways.

‘A German Tale’ tells us the story of an old man looking back at his childhood in Berlin.

I’m extremely excited with the end result and proud that Ole picked the city I build for this production.

In RL I’ve been to Filmschool, owned a tv/movie production company and have been a writer and director and I’m very impressed with this video, it makes me wish I had the time to start making machinima myself.

I started the 1920s Berlin Project because of my passion for history and saw in Second Life a way to share and even contaminate people from all over the world with this love for the past…

Inventoil Made Easier

Harper Beresford uses this interesting trick in Firestorm client to do some bulk inventory control. You can check to see if it works in other viewers, but the odds are it works only in Firestorm. I haven’t tried this myself, as I’m satisfied with Bright or other similar boxes; your mileage may vary.

Inventoil Made easy

“There’s never enough of the stuff you can’t get enough of.” ~ Patrick H.T. Doyle

Inventoil Made easy

A few years ago I introduced the word “inventoil” to the world, which was my word for going through my inventory and sorting things. At the time my inventory was almost manageable. I knew what I had and where it might be. That ended a couple years ago when boxes exploded with fatpacks of fatpacks, and I started joining events to blog. And oh, well, I shop a lot too. Pfff.

StarlightShining clued me into a fancy trick in Firestorm that is going to revolutionize your inventory, especially if you have a hoarding problem as I do. And I’m going to teach you how to do it. The bottom line is that you are going to be able to pack massive amounts of stuff into a package without manually moving it. It’s kind…

Dirk Talamasca memorial service in Second Life, 4pm SLT on Saturday 5th April 2014

Daniel says it all in his article. Dirk Talamasca will be missed, and I hope you’ll attend the memorial; it may be tricky for me to get there, but I’m going to make the attempt. Blessings on Dirk, and sympathy for his family

Daniel Voyager

As you have no doubt heard, Dirk Talamasca passed away in real life last Sunday 30th March 2014 which is really sad news for the grid and I received word today that there will be a special memorial service held in Second Life to remember him.

The plan is to gather at the Linden Memorial Park this Saturday, April 5 at 4:00 PM SLT to remember the wonderful times, help, and laughter that Dirk so freely gave to all who had the good fortune to meet him in his nine years in Second Life.

Please spread the word in SL and via social media. Everyone is welcome to attend.
