It had been a long day, a day in a string of days filled with lots of nothing. Business lately was flatter than a Martian flat cat; and brother, that’s flat. Even the weather was depressed; it had been spitting rain all day, the kind of rain that ate holes in ceramacrete here on Chania 3, nice and acid.  Anyway, I was sitting in my office, fighting the latest battle in the age-old war between income and expenses. As usual, the expenses were winning; I hadn’t seen a clipped credit in weeks.  I was already a month behind on the rent; the landlord was beginning to give me the fish eye and tap on the commlink on his belt every time he saw me, which was turning into every morning as I walked in the lobby.  I knew what that meant; he kept the name of his favorite bouncer on speed dial there, some critter big and blue and with six arms.  When that guy bounced you, you stayed bounced.

I was getting ready to give it up for the day, when there was a knock on the door.  A knock on the door meant one of two things:  the landlord’s bouncer, or a paying client.  Right at the moment, I couldn’t be fussy.  If it was the bouncer, he’d just rip the door off if I didn’t open it, and the landlord was in the right, anyway.  If it was a client, I might just make enough out of this to stave off Blue Boy’s advent.  I keyed the door….

…and knew that this case was probably gonna be worth big credits, and that I was in a whole lot of trouble from the get-go.

mardi-gras

Bienvenue sur le Rue Bourbon, dans le ville de La Nouvelle-Orléans!  At this time of year, the biggest parties of the world are held in Mobile, Rio de Janiero, the Caribbean islands, and especially to American minds, in New Orleans, where Mardi Gras provides the traditional closeout to the church calendar season of Epiphany.  Jem and I took it a little farther than short tops and tons of beads this year; it looks like we should be on a float for one of the famous Crewes!

And no, Peter Minuet, we won’t flash you our boobs for beads.  (Laughing)

Edges of Autumn   Leave a comment

edges-of-autumn-wallpaper

Every year we have been
witness to it: how the
world descends

into a rich mash, in order that
it may resume.
And therefore
who would cry out

to the petals on the ground
to stay,
knowing as we must,
how the vivacity of what was is married

to the vitality of what will be?
I don’t say
it’s easy, but
what else will do

if the love one claims to have for the world
be true?

So let us go on, cheerfully enough,
this and every crisping day,

though the sun be swinging east,
and the ponds be cold and black,
and the sweets of the year be doomed.

Bal Masqué

bal-masque-1

There’s a flutter of grey through the trees:
Ah, the exquisite curves of her dress as she passes
Fleet with her feet on the path where the grass is!

bal-masque-2

I see not her face, I but see
The swift re-appearance, the flitting persistence—
There!—of that flutter of grey in the distance.

bal-masque-3

It has flickered and fluttered away:
What a teasing regret she has left in my day-dream,
And what dreams of delight are the dreams that one may dream!

bal-masque-4

It was only a flutter of grey;
But the vaguest of raiment’s impossible chances
Has set my heart beating the way of old dances.

Club Night

club-night-1

Harper suggested we go check out a club called Cyberia Openstage.  The Destination Guide (a handy thing at times for newbies or relative newbies for finding fresh places; even you oldbies should try it sometimes) lists it as “a sci-fi themed place with an open stage for all aspiring and established deejays.”  And we loved it when we got there; someone was playing electronica at the time, and a batch of people were grooving the beat.  We recommend it for music and dancing, if you ever want to go clubbing someplace that doesn’t require a ball gown.

Aria and Alpha

Aria and Alpha 1

The location is The Place — though not that place.  (Ten points, a free God’s Blessing, and a trip to the chalk line if you can tell me which place that place is, and why.)  And you would not believe what I’ve went through to get these few photos.  There were more, but I had no shadows at the first place I tried, and then I forgot to save the gown the first time through, and lost track of a headdress I was wearing — I have headdresses across so many different spots in Inventory, I hate as a librarian and a supposedly “organized” person to admit it.  I’ve finally said, “To hell with it,” and I’m going with the basic gown I put together, sans headdresses, staffs, and other magical adornments.  But what a dress, and what adornments I do have in here.  First of all, the gown is PurpleMoon — need we say more?  When Poulet Koenkamp does it, she does it right.
