The Royal Ladies of the Universe   Leave a comment

It’s been a busy time for all four of us, between our various RL jobs, activities and families; but especially for me.  You see, I just semi-retired … I’ve taken up new, easier occupations, but retired completely from my retail job.  Another Christmas shopping season like the last would have been soul-crunching, if not crushing.  And I’m not really up to the physical demands of retail in many ways, what with my RL age.  (We won’t go into details!)

But also, the last child will be leaving the nest to enter college in the fall — he graduates from high school next week — and that would mean, if I were scheduled for a night shift, that the husband would come home to a dark house after a long shift at the office.  After over 12 years of going through this, that’s not any good.  Last year, I asked if there were a chance of getting placed permanently on morning (opening) shift at all, and informed that wasn’t possible.  That, plus various changes at several levels in the company, made me feel it was time to “turn in my papers.”

And so, with that, it’s time to celebrate!  A change of clothes, a change of skin … hell, even a change of hair … and then sweet-talking the other ladies to do it with me.

In the Hamptons   Leave a comment

From you have I been absent in the spring,
When proud-pied April, dressed in all his trim,
Hath put a spirit of youth in everything,
That heavy Saturn laughed and leaped with him,

“Public Greensward”   Leave a comment

“The complete separation of toil and leisure has given Ardana this perfectly balanced social system ….”

Droxine (Diana Ewing), Star Trek (original series), “The Cloud Minders”

“Those who receive the rewards are totally separated from those who shoulder the burdens ….”

Spock, same episode

“The enjoyment of scenery employs the mind without fatigue and yet exercises it; tranquilizes it and yet enlivens it; and thus, through the influence of the mind over the body gives the effect of refreshing rest and reinvigoration to the whole system.”

The woman reflected on those words, written on a stone plaque near the entrance, as she strolled along the pathways of the park.  The thing, of course, was that there was much more space available in the 19th Century than in the 32nd.  This small “park” was contained inside a floating force bubble, and was not accessible to the groundlings who “lived” beneath the sky towers.  The woman shuddered at that memory; she had seen the ground levels in the past ….

Now why did that give her a cautionary twinge, as if she could just perceive the makings of a great catastrophe in the future …?  No, there was nothing to worry about; better to enjoy life to the fullest, and the future would deal with itself.

While, thousands of meters beneath her on the surface streets, the future simmered and roiled … and waited ….

Harper hasn’t written much about Zana Sherman as a grown adult yet in her Ariel Sherman stories; she’s mainly looking at Zana’s early years when she puts the girl in one of her Ariel stories.  But she does have one story, where she has Zana in her twenties appearing between the main sections of her as a child, getting ready to watch a documentary of her life as the first naturally-born cyborg.   (It’s a long story; she’s outlined it for me, so ask Harper for the details.)  When she wants a photo of Zana as an adult, Harper comes to me.

Winter Interlude   Leave a comment

A lovely long gown, and the complete, sinful luxury of heavy “furs” in a hat and stole, all on a winter day — what more could one ask?

One note here:  Belle Epoque’s gown has its own arms, so you’ll need to mask out your own arms if you get this package.  In fact, I needed to mask most of my body, except for a slice from below my neck to my breasts.  So don’t worry too much about your elaborate library of poses, outside of favorite stances on your legs.  In compensation, the gown and furs are HUD driven, so you have a selection of colors and fur types to choose from.  I have a taste for grey fox, so ….

Sarariwoman, also known as the Working Stiff

Let the river run
Let all the dreamers
Wake the nation
Come, the new Jerusalem

Silver cities rise
The morning lights
The streets that meet them
And sirens call them on
With a song

Sky-High Party

As our shuttle approached the spacedock, Jem glanced to her right and said to me, “Why the devil did the traffic computer assign us to land up here?  It doesn’t look that busy to me; I only see that green shuttle down there, and there was almost nothing around the main station pad.”

I shrugged briefly, focused on feathering the thruster controls.  Takeoffs are nothing, Real Life or Second Life; it’s always the landings that kill you ….  “You take no chances in space. Traffic Control must have spotted something out there, so it shifted us to this dock.  Fear not, Jemmy; the ways of the traffic computer are simply mysterious, and beyond mortal ken.  Sometimes they’re beyond the ken of the traffic computer, too.”

Jem replies to my humor on the second page.
