Donna Flora Jewelry Returns!   Leave a comment

Donna Flora has Reopened!

I’ve been getting back into Plurk over the recent months, and Cajsa Lilliehook put up a wonderful piece of information on her timeline tonight, shared by Skye Donardson — the jewelry collection of the late Giulia Pelos, better known in world as Squinternet Larnia of Donna Flora, has returned for sale.

Budgetary reasons forced the closure for a time of the store that was being maintained as a memorial to one of the finest maestras of virtual Italian design, as well as a friend to many Residents in world. We lost her close to six years ago to cancer, and the Grid became a touch less colorful and delicious as a result. Her then-current store was maintained in her honor, but had to be closed, as I have noted.

However, Skye Donardson has found some fresh land and opened it back up, with all proceeds after rentals going to Relay for Life to support the fight against cancer. The store is smaller, as Skye is focusing on Squinternet’s jewelry (most of which is sculpted). She looks to have a substantial slice of the collection up for sale, if not the whole thing.

For you younger Residents, who never knew the beauty of a Donna Flora design, this will be your chance to pick up some of the fashion history of Second Life, as well as do good in fighting the disease that took a fine woman from us. Teleport in, and enjoy!

Goodbye, Squinternet

Myself with Squinternet Larnia (on the right), at her main store in March 2012

Myself with Squinternet Larnia (on the right), at her main store in March 2012.  Far too brief an acquaintance on my part; the few times I met her were always a pleasure.

Word came down this morning from Cajsa Lilliehook that Squinternet Larnia died this morning.  Giulia never gave up in her fight to master the cancer that was sapping her life, and our world’s been richer to have a woman of such beauty, imagination and determination in it.  I hope you’ll join me in prayer for her.

My own words are failing me at the moment, so that’s basically it for now.  As Cajsa, if I hear of a memorial planned for Squinternet, I’ll spread the news here.

SL Sartorialist — Love Donna Flora!

I went back in today to do a little more shopping at Love Donna Flora!, and turned loose my staff photographer to do some SL Sartorialist work along the paths of the vineyard.  And so, with further non-ado:

Remember, the benefit sale will run through August 11, at midnight SLT.  I hope we’ll see you there!

Loving Donna Flora

The Love Donna Flora event is opening on July 25 and going to August 11 on one sim with over 130 designers. They are each donating at least one item with 100% of the proceeds from the sale of the item going to Squinternet Larnia. Many are donating much more. Squinternet has had cancer that has metastisized to her bones and because of her current treatments, her income in SL—which is her personal living income–has decreased while her expenses have increased. Cajsa Lilliehook, concerned for Squinternet’s well being, organized this event.

I first ran across Squinternet Larnia’s work in a small shop in what I am guessing was late 2008. I remember I was impressed by the variety of fashion and the creativity of the creator. She seemed to build each outfit as its own creation—no separate colorations—and she…

Donna Flora Benefit Moves Toward Readiness

I bumped into Cajsa Lilliehook, one of the organizers for the I Love Donna Flora! benefit coming up in a few weeks, and she was kind enough to take me behind the scenes to see the build on the sim where it will be held.  I won’t give away secrets or show pictures here, but I can say that the beginnings are great, and the theme of the event will be very appropriate for Squinternet Larnia.

Keep your eye on the official blog for more information, including details on opening; and, if you have a message of love and support for Squinternet, please drop her a card!

Donna Flora in the Fountain

Three coins in a fountain
Each one seeking happiness
Thrown by three hopeful lovers
Which one will the fountain bless

Three hearts in a fountain
Each heart longing for its home
There they lie in the fountain
Somewhere in the heart of Rome

For those who have been wondering about how Squinternet Larnia has been doing, the reports are that she is improved, and in fact has gotten a better diagnosis than was feared for her.  She isn’t out of the woods yet, but she is gradually working her way back into activity, and managed to set up her store at the recent Fashion for Life.  She has also put together a new dress, with the lovely retro flairs that are her signature take on Italian style.

I figured, after picking up my own set of Donna Flora’s new April dress, that I’d go walking around the Bonin region that holds Squinternet’s atelier.  It was a pleasure to discover this recreation of Rome’s Trevi Fountain, and it gave me the idea for my interpretation of the frock.
You can get a look at it in detail after the break.
