Nobody, including Loretta Young, thought she had a snowball's chance in 1947, when she played the lead in "The Farmer's Daughter."  1948 rolled around, and everyone thought Rosiland Russell was a shoe-in for the little gold man.  Then Frederic March opened up the envelope as people were picking up their wraps to leave, and announced Loretta's name.  The audience gasped, then applauded wildly, while a shocked Young went up on stage in a huge taffeta gown by Adrian to accept the award she never dreamed she would get.
