The Highest of Heels and a Beautiful Hat

Highest of Heels and a Beautiful Hat 2

“If they ever do my life story, whoever plays me needs lots of hair color and high heels.”

— Charlize Theron

The way you wear your hat,
The way you sip your tea,
The memory of all that —
No, no! They can’t take that away from me!

— Ira Gershwin (lyricist), “They Can’t Take That Away From Me”

Ariel shook her head and smiled — mentally — as she complied with the holographer’s instructions.  This was her first time modeling, and it was unlike anything she had done so far in her career as a singing and stage star.

Even in the 4700s C.E., fan interest, not to mention worship, drove much of entertainment, creating a desire for holographs of performers to satisfy the craving (and, of course incidentally, to publicize their current projects).  And fashion spreads were one of the most common methods of generating ‘graphs; vid and stream stars had posed for decades, then granted interviews to go along with the spread.  Ariel herself had her favorite fashion sites, and enjoyed her own favorite performers strut their way around in alternately insane and beautiful clothes.

But then Dara Furtano, the publicist working with her revue, Nights of Fantasy, had approached her with the offer from Vogue Galactica.  It had been four months since the revue’s re-opening to renewed and wildly satisfied crowds, and Dara was now suggesting that Ariel capitalize on that success.  The designers were as out of orbit as you could get — clothes that were perfect for a cyborg to model.  And, on seeing what was being offered for her to strut in, Ariel was intrigued.  The end result was her code-signature on a contract, an absence from the show for three weeks, an all-expenses-paid trip to Daller Prime, and here she was on a walkway between two sections of an entertainment complex, spinning and pouting inside the holograph field.

She could actually see the advantages of having a ‘borg modeling the outfit she was wearing now — or at least the shoes she was wearing.  The computer part of her mind was able to compensate for the immense height the platform soles and huge stiletto heels added on to her walk, and the durafiber that now made up her muscles could handle the strains of the arching, tottering stride.  She hoped an organic wasn’t planning to wear these suckers!  Although she wouldn’t be surprised if some…what were they called…?  Yeah, “fashionistas.”…if some over-the-top fashionistas did.  Their feet, and their funeral, she thought with another mental grin.  Didn’t some fellow once say that high heels are pleasure with pain?  No pain for me, but if someone’s willing to go for it in these suckers….  And they are pretty!

Ah, but this outfit, anyone could wear, and it was delicious!!!  Run up by Zibska, and with some antigrav elements to the flourish of squares on the right side that worked quite nicely.  Ariel couldn’t decide for herself if she would wear this during the daytime or for the cocktail hour.  Either way, she liked it; and she was glad that Dara had negotiated into the modeling contract that she get to keep the dress.  She didn’t need that little provision, of course, what with the credit she was pulling down back on Videra, and she was going to slip Zibska the cost when she got home.  But it was lovely to have this dress from the get-go.

“Give me a growly look, darling; make like you’re about to jump me an’ bash my head in!”

Ariel was tempted to do just that to the holographer for a picosecond; there was only one person in the galaxy she wanted to call her “darling,” and Adam was sitting here “on set” with her, watching the proceedings.  She settled for channeling the displeasure directly into her stare, and the holographer nearly squealed with joy as he shot away.  She figured the “angry” look was enhanced by the headdress she wore, made up of layers of crystachrome “feathers” that surrounded her entire face and completely covered her head.  The headdress was the actual “star” of this part of the shoot, as she understood it; it was also from Zibska, and this particular version, available in a limited supply, could actually be set to change colors on three different layers.  There was a necklace that went along with the headdress and functioned the same way, but it had proved a little fussy to work with, and so the stylist had set it aside.  That helped force attention onto the hat, anyway, Ariel felt — another lovely piece she was going to add to her closet.

All things considered, this might have been one of Dara’s better ideas….
