Sky-High Party   3 comments

As our shuttle approached the spacedock, Jem glanced to her right and said to me, “Why the devil did the traffic computer assign us to land up here?  It doesn’t look that busy to me; I only see that green shuttle down there, and there was almost nothing around the main station pad.”

I shrugged briefly, focused on feathering the thruster controls.  Takeoffs are nothing, Real Life or Second Life; it’s always the landings that kill you ….  “You take no chances in space. Traffic Control must have spotted something out there, so it shifted us to this dock.  Fear not, Jemmy; the ways of the traffic computer are simply mysterious, and beyond mortal ken.  Sometimes they’re beyond the ken of the traffic computer, too.”

I heard a rude noise from the co-pilot’s seat, but ignored it as I lined up for final approach.  In a few moments, though, station Traffic Control had the shuttle locked on autopilot, and I could twist around to the aft cabin.  “You good back there, Diana?”

“I’m okay,” Diana Myeong, a new SL friend, said.  “Definitely a different place for a late Hallowe’en costume party, I’ll say that!”

“You ought to see some of the other places I’ve seen since Harper started me coming in here,” Jem said.  “And some of the things I’ve worn, too!”

“I know.  Yours and her photos were what got me going, along with the other stuff in the groups on Flickr.”

“That’s nothing compared to what I’ve seen, you two kids,” I smiled.  “Ten years last month, remember?  And the 10th blog anniversary is coming up in a few weeks.  For that matter, Jemmy, you’re coming up on your second rezz day.  Planning anything for the blog?”

“I’ve been thinking about it,” Jem said with her own grin.  “I missed last year, but that was because I was still shaking down.”

“It doesn’t need to be anything big or profound, so don’t concern yourself over that.  Just have fun with it.”

Jem shouted over her shoulder to Diana, “And this is how she hands out assignments, as you may notice.  If she talks you into writing, beware!”  We all laughed as the shuttle slid through the hangar doors.

We landed a minute later, waited for seal and pressurization, clipped our way carefully down the boarding ramp — we were wearing massive platform soles, after all — and got ready to ride the internal transit down to the party at the space station.  “Everyone watch out about brushing up against things in here,” I said.  “This is a working hangar; it can get a little grody at times, and you don’t want to ruin Zib’s dresses.”

Jem eyed the red-coated ‘droid guard as she came down the ramp.  “Is this guy for serious?  He looks ready to conquer a town or something.”

The guard replied, deadpan, “No, mistress, I am not serious.  I am also not black.”

Jem blinked, then groaned to Diana, “This sounds like the boss’s work here.  Watch out; you don’t want to hang around her too much, or you’ll be ready to commit avatarcide at some point.”

“I’ll remember,” Diana laughed.  “She seems safe so far, though.”

“That’s because you’re new to Second Life,” I replied with a sweet, evil smile.  “Jemmy’s known me longer.”

  1. Mmmmm, I love me some sci-fi.

  2. Is this a regular, you introducing new people by making them look like aliens? You did Jem that way, too (laughing).

Do you have a thought to share on this?
