Cyborgs of Fantasy

It was a Saturday evening, two nights before the official public première of The Land of Fantasy’s new revue, which Lady Ariel Sherman and her writers had christened Nights of Fantasy.  Newsstream writers, critics and celebrities from across several stellar cubes of planetary sectors had been invited to a preview of the show, and an after-party to celebrate.  And the mood of the people milling through Sherman Mansion at that party, hosted by herself and her husband, Lord Adam Sandhara, gave Ariel every encouragement that the reviews soon to be written and off-hand interviews to be given would be strongly in the positive.  Her smile gleamed almost as much as the sheen of the garden lights from her golden integument as she moved through the crowd of information-hungry reporters and celebrities who toasted her with sparkling etrinya wine and air-kissed her when they saw her.

Four years ago, such an event hadn’t been needed.  The news coverage of the freeing of over 700 citizens of the Limlight Republic from bondage, following their near-total conversion into cyborg “pleasure workers,” had still been fresh in the public’s mind when the original version of Ariel’s revue premiered.  Now, Nights of Fantasy needed to compete in the market alongside the other entertainments on the pleasure planet Videra, and that meant publicity.  Ariel had set the marketing group her theatre always used to work on it, and that included Dara Furtano, the young woman who had arranged and masterminded this party.

Young indeed, Ariel thought as she spotted Dara under a wooden gazebo in the garden and went over to speak with her.  Figuratively, Dara was less than a year old, though she had been born over twenty years before.  Dara had requested that Ariel provide the means to convert her into a ‘borg herself, for reasons that still mystified Ariel in some ways.  Ariel had resisted every request — until an accident at the theatre had almost killed her and her daughter, Zana.  Dara, nearby at the time, had saved them, which placed Ariel in lifedebt to Dara; and, after more discussion, had agreed reluctantly to the conversion.  She had found no cause to regret that concession; indeed, Dara, already an excellent publicist and marketing executive, had grown even better with her now total recall of needed data, as well as the ability to synthesize solutions on the fly.  And her already present beauty had been intensified by her conversion into a silvery cyborg.

“Dara, if I had to give the night a review, I’d say you’re what they used to call a boffo success,” Ariel smiled as she stepped under the gazebo.  “Thank you so much for what you’ve done for us.  And you are as charming as could be in that gown!  I thought it would look good on you.”

Dara smiled back, if shyly, and dipped a small curtsey to her host, the fuchsia folds of her dress billowing about her in the bob.  “Thank you back, lady.  The same could be said about you, how well the show went off; it was fantastic!  And your dress is lovely, too.”

“Something I pulled out of my closet; I hadn’t had a decent place to wear it until tonight, and I don’t think you can find it anywhere now.  Who knows, but it may come back into style after tonight.”

Tholosa, the Witch-queen

October’s here!  Time to start getting in gear for Halloween, and I’ve got just the thing here.  I was going to just publish these on Flickr, but at least a few of them are pretty decent; so I’ll do the same thing here as I did on there, publish them with text beneath to explain each scene in my story.  It’s definitely a first for me, I’m not sure what Harper would have to say about this one.  But if she can publish her stuff on here, so can I, and she’s been encouraging me to. You get to judge how I do.

Fair warning disclosure — there’s a lot of large pictures here.  Have patience if it takes a little for them to load, please.

You can see the entire original collection in full size in the album on Flickr (aside from several I’m adding in here to help bulk out the collection, or that I reshot with Conan to improve things).

Tholosa the Exalted, the Witch-queen of the Empire of Oshor Chih — known not as The Exalted by her enemies, but as Tholosa of the Grave — takes her ease in her palace’s apartments, beneath a statue of one of the strange gods she worships.  Even in the gloom of her rooms, this strange woman, who has conquered and absorbed into her empire kingdom after kingdom, glows with a shell of power.  This encourages her unlettered slaves to believe in her as a goddess, and puts to use the undesirable effect of all the sorcerous protections she has cast about her in self-defense.

Club Night

club-night-1

Harper suggested we go check out a club called Cyberia Openstage.  The Destination Guide (a handy thing at times for newbies or relative newbies for finding fresh places; even you oldbies should try it sometimes) lists it as “a sci-fi themed place with an open stage for all aspiring and established deejays.”  And we loved it when we got there; someone was playing electronica at the time, and a batch of people were grooving the beat.  We recommend it for music and dancing, if you ever want to go clubbing someplace that doesn’t require a ball gown.

Looking for photos of Cyberia? Not here, but edgy fashion, yes. Turn the page.

Tutorial On Tattoo Makeup — Exotic/Glam/Fantasy

Last night (or early this morning), I went over for new avatars (and any old hands who are interested in a refresher) how to get a good casual/daytime look for your avatar, especially around the eyes, with tattoo makeup.  This time, I’m taking on something more intense…yet the concepts and techniques are essentially the same.

Tattoo-layer makeup and attachment “stacking” are as important a tool as a good outfit, mesh or flexi or system, in achieving what you want to look like for any situation; the glorious variety of eyeshadows and lipsticks now available from in-world designers allow a Resident to create thousands of different facial looks with a little work and shopping.  The quarterly Cosmetics Fair (going on now) offers a good place to start investing in your own makeup kit, and will give you as much versatility in your appearance as a shopping spree at a hairstylist.

(N. B., July 2015:  Remember, as I noted in the previous article, not everything I use here may be available now.  It’s up to you to know your “makeup table,” what you have on hand that can achieve the looks you desire.  There are usually other items out there that can fill in for something I use here that may no longer be out for sale, and they can be found with a little persistence or patience.)

And so, down to it….

The tutorial continues after the break.

Tutorial On Tattoo Makeup — Daytime

Time for a bit of a tutorial here.  “Old hands” may not particularly need a refresher; but I actually encountered an established Resident the other day who complimented me on my makeup choices, and then said that she could never figure out how to do eyeshadow the way she liked.  So some older Residents may want to take a look at this as well.  It’s also an appropriate time to take a glance at makeup, since this quarter’s MONS Cosmetic Fair is running.  I’ve taken a turn through — getting new eyeshadow tattoos and lipstick and nails for SLink hands is almost as much fun as extreme hair at Hair Fair — and it pays to know how to use those tattoos to the best effect.

I’m going to do two different looks:  a form for casual or semi-casual occasions, and another for something much more exotic, more like a costume event, or a Sixties-style modeling session with Veruschka or Edie Sedgwick in front of the lens.  In both cases, my skin is Faith (sunkissed, nude lips) by PXL’s Hart Larsson, which is my standard day-to-day skin.  The nude lips have the advantage of less interference with lipstick if you’ve picked up a lip tattoo that doesn’t cover the entire lip line; but sometimes having pre-dyed lips below a small tattoo can give an interesting grace note to the look.  Lipstick, though, can be left for the end of the session.

Keep in mind that the products I use may have been available in the past, but that doesn’t guarantee that they’re on hand now.  I like to use lots of old standbys that have worked for a long time, though I may juggle the palette around at times for different colors, depending on my hair and clothes.  Once you start building a makeup collection, you’ll probably accumulate a batch of goodies that become your “go-to” products as well.

The tutorial begins after the break.

London City Mod!

If you’re Olympic crazy, like I can be at times, you have to stop in to the host city; you just have to!  Unfortunately, most of my money goes into keeping a RL house over my head, so I chose to visit London City instead.  When I got there, the joint was jumping; over 80 avatars were hanging out around the central Regents Park, with spillover into the other two related sims.  But I still managed to get a few nice shots in. 3 Casual Mesh Dresses (Updated)

June 19:  updated to include SLurls; I was going to sleep when I originally started searching them out.

Today, you’re getting one massive mess of fashion — mesh dresses from some great designers.  You’ll see them in the slideshow below, in order of the description (if I’m lucky); you can pause the show and right-click, then select “View Image” (or equivalent) to see a larger view.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

coldLogic is a name that is earning lots of interest among Grid fashionistas with their mesh designs.  This dress, called Owens, fits quite nicely to your curves, though I had to tweak my shape somewhat to get the fit right.  Having never tweaked these settings before, it was probably time to do a little adjustment.  (I sometimes think I’m a little over-endowed in the boobs, anyway, so a bit of breast reduction was probably a good thing.)

Prism is a great favorite of mine, though I haven’t wrote much about Journey’s pieces lately.  I tend to think more of her knits than summer clothes.  However, the Emily mesh top and pants are shooting right up to a favorite spot for summer casual wear.

Of course, every woman who loves evening dresses has heard of Sascha’s Designs, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they have at least one of Sascha Frangilli’s famed “battleship-skirt” gowns in their closet.  But Sascha also does casual wear, and this, believe it or not, is her first mesh entry.  Fittingly, it’s named Mondriaan, and is as mod as it gets; but fits quite nicely into modern tastes as well.

Across the board, I’m wearing shoes from R2 Fashion, a fantastic shoe designer I discovered at Collarbor88.  I’ve been stocking up on shoes since, and am featuring her extremely stylish pumps, wedges and boots all through here.
