Feathers and Shine On the Giant’s Causeway

In the north of Ireland is a stretch of basalt columns known as the Giant’s Causeway, formed by a volcanic eruption. As the lava cooled while welling up from the ocean floor, it formed itself into hexagonal pillars that stretch out some meters from the actual coast itself. The locals, however, would have it different — they will tell you that the rocks are the remains of a bridge, rubble from the nearby coast which was dropped there by the Irish giant Finn mac Cumhaill to make a road to Scotland, there to fight an enemy. ‘Tis said that, on finding that the Scot was twice as large as he was, he beat a strategic retreat back to Ireland, where he was hidden, disguised as a baby. When the Scot discovered the “baby,” and saw his size, he had to reckon that Finn must be of a monstrous size indeed, and legged it home himself, tearing up the causeway behind him.

We picked up a fragment of the Causeway in Second Life, in a corner of Rustic Retreat, a fantasy-themed region that I investigated today. You can almost imagine giants and fae here ….
