Revisiting Byron   Leave a comment

She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that’s best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes;
Thus mellowed to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies ….

George Gordon, Lord Byron, “She Walks In Beauty”

Writing the previous article reminded me of a piece I wrote back in 2013, close to this time of the year, in fact (I published it on August 31). It had been about the time of the 2013 Black Fair, and Pure Poison … who were making clothing instead of shoes back then … had just released this lovely gown, all glittering sequins and a netting overgown that melted my buyer’s resistance into a puddle of goo. I just about titled that last article the same thing as six years ago; fortunately, I recalled the previous, and found another poem, by a poet I’ve loved for years, Edna St. Vincent Millay.

Tholosa, the Witch-queen

October’s here!  Time to start getting in gear for Halloween, and I’ve got just the thing here.  I was going to just publish these on Flickr, but at least a few of them are pretty decent; so I’ll do the same thing here as I did on there, publish them with text beneath to explain each scene in my story.  It’s definitely a first for me, I’m not sure what Harper would have to say about this one.  But if she can publish her stuff on here, so can I, and she’s been encouraging me to. You get to judge how I do.

Fair warning disclosure — there’s a lot of large pictures here.  Have patience if it takes a little for them to load, please.

You can see the entire original collection in full size in the album on Flickr (aside from several I’m adding in here to help bulk out the collection, or that I reshot with Conan to improve things).

Tholosa the Exalted, the Witch-queen of the Empire of Oshor Chih — known not as The Exalted by her enemies, but as Tholosa of the Grave — takes her ease in her palace’s apartments, beneath a statue of one of the strange gods she worships.  Even in the gloom of her rooms, this strange woman, who has conquered and absorbed into her empire kingdom after kingdom, glows with a shell of power.  This encourages her unlettered slaves to believe in her as a goddess, and puts to use the undesirable effect of all the sorcerous protections she has cast about her in self-defense.

Liquid Light

Light Thoughts 1

One way Harper got me into this crazy world was the promise that I could be as alien as I wanted to be, almost anywhere I went.  I won’t say I’ve hit the limit yet.  As I get cash to add more stuff into my inventory, I’m trying out more and more things, and having lots of fun!  And I can see how much Harper loves dressing up in her gold skin, which I haven’t gotten yet myself.  (I may soon!)

One place to pick up things for a spacey look was the Metaverse event, which closed a few days ago.  The nice thing is that we did some research between us, and you can get most of the goodies from that event at the vendors’ main stores.  Remember, you don’t need to do all your shopping at events!  These designers have beautiful stores that they would like to keep open as well, and they deserve some “Linden love” (right?) there as well.

Anyway, I found this dress from Plastik at Metaverse, and had to get several different colors.  Here’s a hint, by the way — you may still want to go to the main stores if you really love something, because I found more colors for this dress at Plastik’s store in their own vendor, instead of at the event.  They didn’t have everything at Metaverse.  As it worked out, I still needed to “dye” this dress, which Harper showed me how to do; it was no problem at all.
